Helios – bringing the taste of modern Greece to Bahrain

Little parts of the world are popping up all around Bahrain at the moment – and bringing us fabulous new foods that we haven’t seen here before. One such place is the newly-opened boutique Greek restaurant Helios, in Bu Quwah’s picturesque Argan Village. This 2-story gem is all about the fresh flavours and rustic ambience of Greece, but with a modern twist.

Chef Thanasis (second from left) and his talented team
Recently a small group of lucky foodie-types were invited to sample an 8-course degustation menu at Helios. Renowned Crete-born Chef Thanasis Roussos and his team treated us to a wide variety of delicious Helios dishes that showcased his culinary approach – to nurture tradition but develop and modernise it.
Guests were serenaded by a pianist….
And a guitarist playing Greek tunes (of course!)
The first four dishes were, in true Greek style, from the sea.
The lovely lemon-flavoured vongole with clams and bottarga from the Mesolongi Sea
Another of my faves – this giant oyster was bathed in green apple juice and paired with a crispy spearmint chip
I enjoyed the wonderfully-unique approach to these mussels – topped with tomato sauce, toasted almonds and infused with coffee flavours
Chef Thanasis introduced each dish to us between courses – its ingredients and inspiration, and told a story about a taxi ride he took when he first arrived on the island. While chatting to the driver, he was struck by the local love for all things sweet – in the food, the water, the people, the language. This theme continues throughout the menu, resulting in innovative pairings of savory and sweet.

A fresh garden salad signaled a change in direction, and was followed by an oak-smoked steak.
The delicious Garden Salad – paired semi-soft and salty Manouri cheese with a sweet caramelised pear
Our steaks being prepared with an oak-flavoured smoke
The great unveiling! Steak on a bed of wild forest mushrooms with butternut squash coulis
The oaky-flavoured smoke worked beautifully with the steak
Everyone loves a dish that brings theatre to the table
For dessert we were treated to two dishes – one a lemon-lover’s delight (and my favourite) and the other layered with rich chocolate. Perfect for all you chocoholics!
Dessert #1 – Yogurt Mousse with lemon curd and caramel on crushed butter biscuits
Dessert #2 – Palette of Chocolate Layers with glazed fruit and chocolate honeycomb in floral honey sauce
Poor camera-shy Chef Thanasis posing for yet another pic!
Helios will open later in the month for dinner on weekdays, and for both lunch and dinner on weekends. And as they say in Greece – kali oreksi! xx
